Resilience: Healing What Ails Us Through Strength, Tenacity & Fellowship

Resilience: Healing What Ails Us Through Strength, Tenacity & Fellowship

Allegany Arts Council
9 N. Centre St., Cumberland MD, 21502
October 5 - October 30, 2018

An exhibition featuring art by Allegany County artists Sandy Arnold and Darrin Isom, who have spent the last several months interviewing and sitting with Allegany County individuals who have - with resilience - faced, suffered from, and overcome a range of challenges and loss due to substance use and/or mental health disorders.

In addition, artists Schroeder Cherry, Nancye Hesaltine, Kathleen Hoagg, Michelle Labonte, and Elisif and Peter Bruun share works invoking four themes of resilience recurring throughout the stories from Arnold's and Isom's project:

  • Breathing: maintaining equilibrium in the throes of anxiety and chaos
  • Walking: celebrating our carrying on despite what weighs us down
  • Living: holding on to hope, joy, and peace in the face of loss and death
  • Caring: how we as a community come together despite what ails us
